Executive Board 2011-2012

President
Michael Riley

Michael Riley is both a loving husband and father. He is a non-traditional undergraduate senior in the School of Social Work. Michael transferred from J. Sargeant Reynolds community College with an Associate’s Degree in Social Science earning a 3.78 GPA. He stated that being a non-traditional student can be difficult especially with the additional responsibilities of family life and financial responsibilities but nothing worth having comes without a price. I am working diligently to maintain the same high academic standard at VCU.

My faith is very important to me and helps keep me grounded as I work towards my Bachelors in Social Work and my ministerial license. People are composed of mind, body and spirit and I believe that a holistic approach to helping people is important. At a young age, I joined the Marine Corps. I felt a personal responsibility to protect people. While serving my country, I was injured and eventually honorably discharged from service. I wandered through life trying to find the best way to serve again.

I chose to become a social worker because of the NASW core values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence. The social work profession focuses on meeting the person where he or she is to help them reach a place of optimum social functioning.

I take responsibility for my fellow man and believe that to whom much is given, much is required. Recently my favorite saying has been; “If you don’t fail now and then, you are playing it too safe.”

Parliamentarian
Marvel Johnson

Marvel Johnson is a loving father. He is a non-traditional undergraduate junior in the School of Social Work. Marvel transferred from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College with an Associate of Science Degree in Social Science. He stated that being a non-traditional student can be difficult especially with the additional responsibilities of family and financial responsibilities.
At a young age I joined the U.S. Army. While serving my country I always thought about what I would do upon my being honorably discharged from service. During my time in the service I acquired strong organizational skills, punctuality, and a commitment to responsibility
It took me a while to figure it out but I decided to do something that would allow me to help others. I chose to become a social worker because the core values such as: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, and integrity are values that govern the social work profession, these values coincide with the family values that I as a child was taught to adhere to at all times.
I take responsibility for my fellow man and believe that to whom much is given much is also required. One of my favorite sayings has been; “Change takes place when the pain of remaining the same is greater than the pain of change.”
